Situated in the heart of Barcelona, a city renowned for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, rich history and important artworks, lies a hidden gem that attracts art enthusiasts and curious travelers from all over the world: Museu Can Framis.

Can Framis is the latest Fundació Vila Casas Museum. Fundació Vila Casas was created in 1986 by the pharmaceutical entrepreneur Antonio Vila Casas as an NGO which main goal was to promote catalan contemporary art. In five exhibition spaces, it showcases the permanent collection and hosts temporary exhibitions. Three exhibition spaces are dedicated to contemporary art museums, and the other two spaces are devoted to temporary exhibitions. The Vila Casas Foundation focuses on Catalan contemporary art, from the 1960s to the present day.

Can Framis is the latest Fundació Vila Casas Museum and it opened in 2009. It offers around 300 artworks dating from the 60’s onwards. All the artworks are by a wide range of artists born or living in Catalonia.

There are also temporary exhibitions held at the Can Framis Espai A0.

The Building: Where history meets modernity

The museum is housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century factory, once owned by the Framis family. The building was a bustling textile facility that was part of the industrial heritage of the Poblenou neighborhood but slowly fell into disuse. This is why it was posible to transform it into a monument to the industry of the area as a museum that stands as a testament to the city’s evolution from an industrial hub to a vibrant center for contemporary art.

Walking towards the entrance of Museu Can Framis, visitors are greeted by an impressive fusion of old and new. The neoclassical façade of the restored factory serves as a reminder of Barcelona’s industrial past, while the contemporary glass extension signifies its commitment to embracing the future. This architectural blend sets the tone for the artistic journey that awaits inside.
